Description of Externship:
Selected applicants will have the opportunity to engage in a combination of both pathology and research training for a 2-week period. Externs will gain experience in the necropsy, surgical pathology and clinical pathology laboratories, which serve the Veterinary Teaching Hospital, regional practitioners, and the Columbus Zoo. Activities will include participation in necropsy duty, attendance at clinical, basic science, and research rounds and seminars, and meetings with selected faculty, staff, and students to learn more about the different research facilities and opportunities available at OSU. OSU features a training environment that is part of the largest health sciences center in the US, incorporating the colleges of veterinary medicine, medicine, pharmacy, dentistry, nursing, and allied medical professions, in addition to the Comprehensive Cancer Center and Children's Hospital. Research training in anatomic pathology is designed to provide experience with molecular biology, virology, biochemistry, immunohistochemistry, gnotobiology, cell culture, and quantitative histomorphometry in investigation of the pathogenesis of disease.
The research areas of OSU Graduate Faculty include cellular and molecular biology, oncology, microbiology and immunology, pathophysiology and pharmacology. Research training leading to a PhD is an important part of OSU's combined residency program, and during the externship, the participant will spend at least 50 percent of their time visiting laboratories and research faculty.
Deadlines are flexible and applicants are selected on an ongoing basis throughout
the year. For consideration, please send a cover letter, CV, and references
to Dr. Krista La Perle, at la-perle.1@osu.edu.
