Programs Offered
The University of California, Davis, offers residency programs in Anatomic and Clinical Pathology through the Veterinary Medical Teaching Hospital (VMTH) and graduate training in Comparative Pathology through the Graduate Group in Comparative Pathology. Training in the residency programs leads to board eligibility for the American College of Veterinary Pathologists. There are eight residents in Anatomic Pathology, three of whom are in a collaborative zoo and wildlife pathology program with the Zoological Society of San Diego; and three residents in Clinical Pathology, some of whom are in a joint residency training program with IDEXX Laboratories. MS and PhD degrees are offered in the Graduate Group, and there are several funded positions including NIH postdoctoral training grants in Environmental Pathology and Comparative Medicine available for individuals with strong interest and ability in pathology.

Most residents transfer to the Comparative Pathology PhD program after two or three years. The combined residency-PhD program is five to six years. Persons with prior training in pathology are encouraged to apply to the degree program. Areas of research include viral pathogenesis, neuropathology, cardiovascular, pulmonary , and reproductive pathobiology, toxicological pathology, immunopathology, wildlilfe pathology, pathology of infectious diseases, and cancer biology. Participants in both programs have broad opportunities in the School of Veterinary Medicine, several departments on the UCD and other UC campuses, the California Primate Research Center, Center of Comparative Medicine, Center for Environmental Health Sciences, Institute for Toxicology and Environmental Health, and the California Animal Health and Food Safety Laboratories (CAHFS).

Facilities
The residency programs are based at the VMTH, the California Animal Health and Food Safety Lab, IDEXX Laboratories (West Sacramento), and the Zoological Society of San Diego. The Graduate programs are based in laboratories throughout UCD, especially in the School of Veterinary Medicine and School of Medicine and their organized research units that have facilities throughout the state.

Community
The University of California, Davis, campus is located in Davis, California, a community with a population of approximately 60,000 located 16 miles west of Sacramento. The School of Medicine has facilities at the UCD Medical Center in Sacramento, a city of approximately 400,000.

Staff
There are eight ACVP anatomic pathologists and four ACVP clinical pathologists participating in the residency training programs at the VMTH as well as several ACVP pathologists at the Primate Center, CAHFS, IDEXX Laboratories, and the Center for Comparative Medicine who contribute to the program through consultation and seminars. There are over 100 UCD faculty members in the Graduate Group in Comparative Pathology including several ACVP pathologists.

Stipends And Maintenance
Resident stipends are provided by the VMTH, IDEXX Veterinary Laboratories, or the Zoological Society of San Diego. There are numerous fellowships or stipends available for graduate students on a competitive basis.
