Programs Offered
The Department of Veterinary Pathology offers a broadly-based, three-year residency in diagnostic animal pathology emphasizing morbid anatomy and histopathology of large and small domestic animals. There is also opportunity to acquire experience with laboratory animal species through collaboration with local pharmaceutical laboratories. The training program is suitable preparation for examinations for Membership of the Royal College of Pathologists.

MVSc, PhD, and a PhD combined with one year of diagnostic pathology are available for research in pathology, microbiology, clinical chemistry, and microbiology.

Facilities
The Department of Veterinary Pathology provides diagnostic services for the Faculty of Veterinary Science Large and Small Animal Hospitals, the University of Liverpool Laboratory Animal Health Officer, and to veterinarians in private practice. Departmental responsibilities include clinical chemistry, hematology, immunology, meat inspection and food hygiene, and microbiology. Experience in toxicological pathology can be arranged through contacts with nearby pharmaceutical industries. The department is fully equipped for diagnostic and research work with light and electron microscopes, immunohistochemistry, flow cytometry, and molecular biology techniques.

Small animal diagnostic facilities are located in the precinct of the University of Liverpool, while those for large animal work are located at the Large Animal Teaching Hospital on Wirral, 12 miles from the city. Both sites have veterinary library collections and electronic databases.

Community
The University of Liverpool is a large civic university with a student body of 21,000 and has Schools of Medicine and Dentistry; the Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine is an affiliated institution. The historic City of Liverpool has diverse cultural and sporting attractions and is close to countryside of great scenic beauty in North Wales, the Lake District, and the Yorkshire Dales.

Stipends and Maintenance
Current funding for the residency program is provided by a number of sponsors including the Horserace Betting Levy Board, The Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons, and Zeneca Pharmaceuticals. PhD research programs are funded by a variety of private and public agencies.
