Timeline
(Deadline of August 20, 2010)
ACVP is offering an award for veterinary students which requires submission of an abstract and a quality poster presentation of pathology-related research or case work material at the 2010 Annual Meeting. The posters will be judged by Student Chapter Sub-Committee representatives during the Annual Meeting in Baltimore, Maryland on October 30-November 3, 2010.
Entitled the “Veterinary Student Poster Award”, the criteria for submission are as follows:
There will be two awards in 2010 – one for an experimental disease poster and one for a clinical poster. The recipients of these awards receive a $250 monetary award (for group entries, the award is split amongst members) and an additional award of $250 will go to the ACVP-recognized Student Chapter (if the recipient/s is/are a member of a Student Chapter).
Awards will be announced at the ACVP Awards and Recognition Event on Tuesday, November 2, at the Annual Meeting in Baltimore. If there are any additional questions, please contact Brett Saladino (brett.saladino@covance.com) or Jane Shepard at the ACVP Executive Office at (meetings@acvp.org).
Abstracts must be submitted by August 20, 2010 to the ACVP Office. Further instructions for submission will be available on the website this summer.
The ACVP offers a Young Investigator Awards (YIA) Poster Competition in four categories:
If fewer than 5 abstracts are submitted within a specific category, these abstracts may be combined with another category by the YIA Chair. Each of these categories will offer up to three monetary awards:
First Place: $500
Second Place: $300
Third Place: $200
This ACVP awards program recognizes quality poster presentations by veterinary pathology residents and graduate students. The posters will be judged by College Diplomates representing several focused scientific groups, during the Annual Meeting in Baltimore, Maryland on October 30-November 3, 2010. Individuals eligible for this competition must be veterinarians currently enrolled in a residency or graduate program in veterinary pathology or that have completed such a program after June 30, 2009. The poster must present original work of the competitor completed during the period of residency or graduate training.
Undergraduate veterinary students still enrolled in a College of Veterinary Medicine are also encouraged to submit posters for the meeting, but they will be judged under a separate category and will be eligible for awards dedicated to student posters (for more information on veterinary student poster awards, see the information below.
Competitors must:
*Be the first author of the presentation
*Should have performed the major portion of the work
*May submit only one poster for consideration
*Register for and attend the ACVP Annual Meeting
Abstracts must be submitted by June 1, 2010 to the ACVP website.
*Competitors are also encouraged to be present at their poster display during the Focused Poster Session on Saturday evening, October 30 from 7:00 p.m.-8:30 p.m. during the Opening Reception; however this is not mandatory.
Awards will be announced at the ACVP Awards and Recognition Event, on Tuesday, November 2, at the Annual Meeting in Baltimore. Recipients are asked to display their winning poster on Wednesday morning from 9:00 a.m.-12:00 noon in the Young Investigator Award poster session.
Entries, as well as competition category, should be indicated on the abstract form. Please note that any additional award a competitor applies for may dictate the category of YIA that he/she is placed in (e.g., if a competitor requests to be entered in the ACVP/AAVLD Travel Award, they will be placed in the Diagnostic Pathology category, or if competing for the STP Award they will be placed in the Toxicologic and Industrial Pathology category). Thus, please ensure that your abstract is in the appropriate YIA category for the awards that you would like to compete for.
If there are any additional questions, please contact Kelli Boyd at kelli.l.boyd@vanderbilt.edu or Jane Shepard at the ACVP Executive Office at meetings@acvp.org.
Purpose: To recognize and award outstanding oral presentations given by residents or graduate students in the field of veterinary clinical pathology.
Eligibility: Candidates must have a degree in veterinary medicine and be enrolled in a residency or graduate program in veterinary clinical pathology or a related discipline. The oral presentation must be given by the candidate during the ASVCP Clinical Pathology Focused Scientific Session at the ACVP/ASVCP Annual Meeting and must describe original work of the competitor that involves clinical, translational, or basic research relating to clinical pathology.
Award Categories: Two awards will be given. One award will be given to the best oral presentation involving basic research that provides new knowledge in the field of veterinary clinical pathology. The award category can be requested by the student, but final assignment of the category will be determined by the chair of Focused Scientific Group and the immediate Past President of the ASVCP. The student will be notified of the final category assignment prior to the meeting.
Award Selection: Award selection will be based on scientific content, abstract composition, clarity of presentation, and the ability to answer questions. Each resident or graduate student may submit only one presentation for this competition. Candidates awarded YIA the preceding year will not be eligible for an award in the subsequent year. The winner of each category will receive a $500 check from the ASVCP.

The Society of Toxicologic Pathology (STP) is pleased to announce the fourth annual STP Student Speaker Award to encourage students to pursue careers in the field of Toxicologic Pathology. The award recipient will receive free registration plus $1,000 to be used for lodging and travel to the 2010 STP Annual Meeting, which will take place June 19-23, 2011, in Denver, CO, and may be asked to present the same presentation at that meeting.
The award will be given to the resident or graduate student whose oral platform presentation is judged best among up to five finalists at the annual joint meetings of the American Society for Veterinary Clinical Pathology (ASVCP) and the American College of Veterinary Pathology (ACVP) in Baltimore, Maryland. The finalists will be selected by the judges from abstracts submitted to the ACVP and ASVCP meeting.
Finalists for this award may be required to give both an oral and a poster presentation if competing in both the Society of Toxicologic Pathology Student Speaker Award competition and the ACVP YIA competition. The applicant should follow the guidelines for application for the Young Investigator Award in Toxicologic and Industrial Pathology to be eligible for this award. On the website, an applicant can choose either poster (if applying for the ACVP YIA competition) or oral presentation (if applying for the STP Student Speaker Award competition) and still be eligible for this award. Only those candidates that choose to enter both the ACVP YIA competition and the STP Student Speaker Award Competition will be asked to prepare both poster and oral presentations.
To be eligible to compete for this award, students must have obtained a degree in veterinary medicine and be enrolled in a residency or graduate program in toxicologic pathology/general pathology/clinical pathology or a related discipline. The oral presentation must describe original work of the competitor involving clinical or experimental research that relates to toxicologic pathology. The presentation content may include in vitro or in vivo studies. The award selection will be determined by an independent panel of judges and will be based on the scientific content of the presentation, composition of the abstract, clarity of presentation, and the presenter’s ability to answer questions. Trainees in clinical and/or morphologic pathology are encouraged to apply for the award.
The recipient of the fourth annual STP Student Speaker Award will be announced at the ACVP Business Meeting on Tuesday, November 2, 2010.
